Dr. Mariam Anees became the first Pakistani to receive the prestigious 'Austrian Life Science Award' in November 2010. She was awarded for her contribution to clinical research in the working group of Prostate Cancer. Her publication titled "Recurrence-free survival in prostate cancer is related to increased stromal TRAIL expression" was a joint study by Medical University of Vienna, Austria and Harvard Medical School, USA, and was selected as the best scientific publication by a young scientist. According to the study findings, a protein ‘TRAIL’, involved in the tumour immune surveillance, is highly altered in prostate cancer cells and its presence in the tumour microenvironment improves the survival prospects of the patients. Dr. Mariam has managed to find evidence for more accurate forecasts and innovative therapies for advanced prostate cancer. She is currently working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan.
